STS is a business unit of Lawinger Consulting, Inc. (LCI). LCI was founded in 1988 by Larry Lawinger as a consortium of IT Professionals who pool their skills and experience to provide the highest level of IT support and development services. The concept for STS was formulated on crisp clear fall day in 2002, when the convergence of two troubling issues was resolved by one solution. Mr. Lawinger, as the father of five high-school and college age boys, was often approached by his sons and their friends for advice on how to break into the IT field. "I can't find a job because I don't have experience and I can't get experience because I can't get a job". Unfortunately, Larry was frustrated by his inability to find suitable experience for many of them in IT related projects. Then he was approached by one of his key clients regarding their desire to find an alternative IT resource that could provide Minnesota based and economical IT skills. After careful research with several local universities and consulting with numerous Corporate IT Managers, a business plan for STS was drafted and presented to LCI clients. In the summer of 2003, a pilot project by STS students was undertaken with 3M. Since then, hundreds of STS "Students" have been placed on dozens of "Cooperative Learning" projects, all with great success. One the most satisfying successes of the STS program has been the great number of IT Students who have "graduated" from STS and gone on to find gainful employment in their chosen field. Why the pool ball motif? The short answer: To remind us to take some time to have fun and to let everyone know we enjoy our work. The long answer: Back in the early days, when Mr. Lawinger rented his first office space for his LCI consultants he needed to have space for team meetings and he also wanted to have space for the team to come together, unwind and have some fun. Like all start-ups he was limited on space and funds. The solution: he purchased a pool table and had a custom oak cover built. Yes, we still use the Pool Table as conference table and often late on a Friday you find the cover off, the sticks out, and a game at hand. Thank you for your interest in STS and please feel free to contact us with any questions that you may have.
